In 2012, there were 10,322 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in the United States. That’s one death every 51 minutes. Of the 10,322 lives lost to drunk driving in 2012, 344 of them were killed in New York. 1,174 of the people who died in drunk driving accidents in 2012 were under the age of 21. 32 of them were killed in New York. From 2010 to 2012, Long Island had 4,448 drunk driving car crashes. Of those crashes, 243 were fatal, cutting 258 lives devastatingly short. 3,520 people sustained injuries as a result of drunk driving car crashes. Anytime that people are known to drink more heavily, the number of drunk driving accidents skyrockets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes is about four times higher at night than during the day.” More than 30% of drivers who were involved in fatal crashes on weekends were alcohol-impaired, and in 2009, 43% of motorcyclists who died on the road had a BAC of at least .08.
